The pain of Bain

…and playing the game…

Yeah, it’s not really news, either.

I can’t figure out why all that money that was raised at Clooney’s party couldn’t have been better placed behind a third party candidate?  Harry Braun, anyone?  Yeah, I don’t think he’s perfect, but it is so refreshing to see an intelligent discussion of the serious issues facing us right now. And not part of the financial/big oil crowd….

~~~~~~~~
Related to this, is this incident with Romney and John Lauber.  I’d heard about this, but couldn’t get to it until now. Wow.  The rightwing host here was having a fit over the publishing of this story–he was saying that this was old news and that the Post was in a conspiracy because it was published the same day that Obama came out for gay marriage.  As if…
The rightwing host went on to say that “this was 1965–nobody wore their hair long then. Nobody.”  Um, yeah, I have a different recollection.  Even though I was only 4 years old at the time, I remember how irate my father was at the “long hairs” and “weirdos”.  So guys were starting to wear their hair long–it just wasn’t acceptable by the anal retentives.  To express your individuality with long hair was verboten–as Herr Romney illustrated.
Anyway, the rightwing host failed to recognize the bullying aspect and how wrong this was.  Romney had no right to impose his will on another.  None.  He was violent towards another individual.  I think that is very relevant to his character and whether we want such a person leading this country.
Let’s see…contempt of the poor, bragging about paying 13% of a normal 35% in taxes, wants to destroy public schools,…and now bullying…sounds like a stand up kinda guy. /snark
The Past is…Present
…and you thought that sexism was a thing of the past…
…lest we think that history is in the past…or that it doesn’t affect the present…
From Gloria Steinem’s book, Revolution from Within, a Book on Self-Esteem:
“Freud, for instance, was actually very clear about his adversarial stance to women’s equality.  “We must not allow ourselves to be deflected…by…the feminist,”  he wrote to his colleagues, “who are anxious to force us to regard the two sexes as completely equal in position and worth.’ Yet his theories have been cited for most of the last century as objective.”
This is significant because the psychiatric profession is based on Freud’s misogyny.  Now, they’ll tell you that he has been discredited, but from what I read of the Diagnostic Manual (DSM), the misogyny is very much a part of diagnosis and treatment.  There was one “disease” that was particularly disturbing–it described the patient as “being emotional, moody” and other symptoms I can’t remember, that pretty much described women.  If only women could just be more like men!
I remember picking up one of my children’s high school textbooks and saw where they devoted nine pages to discussing Freud.  Of course, they said that he had been discredited, but then they devote nine pages to him?  Then I looked at the number of pages devoted to the women’s rights movement…not even two complete pages.  They pretty much condensed it all.  It was something like “women fought for the right to vote…”  And not much more, if I recall correctly.
There’s more from the book  that I thought was significant:
“It is a modern compendium of the scholarly, scientific, and popular evidence–ranging from comparative measurements of skull sizes and arm lengths to anthropological surveys and popular caricatures–that had been originated by 19th century scientists and popularized by journalists to “prove” a respectable and popular thesis:  the Irish had descended from apes only a few generations before, while the English were descendants of man created in God’s image and thus “angels.”
Gees o pete, talk about self-serving “science”…This “theory” was also used against blacks, too, and pretty much any member of a group that was deemed “less than”.  And being Irish, I’m more than a little offended at this characterization, as anyone should be.
…there’s more…
“…neuroanatomists believed that higher mental activities were located in the frontal lobes of the brain.  Not surprisingly, craniologists confirmed that those areas were larger in male skulls than in female ones, and that the less important, parietal regions at the top and sides of the skull were smaller in females.  Toward the turn of the century, however, neuroanatomists revised their opinion:  higher intellectual abilities were located in the parietal regions after all.  Soon, craniologists had discovered that their earlier measurements had been inaccurate:  males actually had larger parietal lobes than females, and the newly important frontal regions were smaller.”
Um-hmmm…as if you could prove anything by brain size.  It’s so ridiculous that this was taken as “science” and not discounted for the biased and subjective work that it is.
How does one measure intelligence?  Is it the ability to do complicated math?  Or is it the ability to recognize plants and their healing abilities? What about the ability to communicate effectively?  What about “street smarts” aren’t they a sign of intelligence?   See my point—who gets to decide what intelligence means? And doesn’t the meaning of intelligence change with changing situations?
Lastly, here’s this humdinger:
By 1879, G LeBon, a French craniologist, had no doubt:  “In the most intelligent races, as among the Parisians, there are a large number of women whose brains are closer in size to those of gorillas than to the most developed male brains.  This inferiority is so obvious that no one can contest it for a moment, only its degree is worth discussion.  (From research work by scholar Elizabeth Fee).
See…anytime someone says that you can’t contest their findings, it’s a good guess that they’re full of it.  Take into account that at this time, the “scientists” were saying that learning “shrunk”  a woman’s uterus.  They drew this conclusion after observing that women who went to college were less likely to have children.    So, naturally, it must be the dreaded education of women that caused their uteruses to shrivel.  Geesh.
As recently as the eighties, when I learned that doctors drew the conclusion that Endometriosis was a “career woman’s disease” because they only diagnosed it in women in their thirties who had put off childbirth while they pursued careers.  When they were ready and tried to conceive, they were unable to and sought help.   Thus, doctors drew the conclusion that it was because these women had pursued careers…not that the condition was caused by medical reasons. (I wonder now if Endometriosis is caused by environmental toxins?)
And don’t forget the video I had linked to in earlier blogs of the psychiatric “profesisonals” who blamed the mother for her child having autism.  Pure prejudice.
Magnifying glass
Well, now it’s even easier for spying on and shooting innocent people.   Coming to FW in October…can’t wait.  (The city was on Fire Friday–three deadly shootings over night with a state police officer shooting someone dead.)
More from the NATO summit–Iraq Veterans Against the War give back their medals.  Good for them.  It’s not easy for them, I’m sure, as it is hard for anyone in this society to speak out against war–with the media promoting war as patriotic (all you protestors are just dirty commie hippies) and the use of media by the Defense Dept to promote it, as well.
Here’s a good clip from PRWatch on FakeNews.
And, lastly, is this.  Talk about turning the technology around…
Double Meanings
I was doing a little research on the group Tenacious D...and came upon the song “Fuck Her Gently”.
I can’t get access to the page now, but I had looked at the link where Jack Black stated that the song was written in response to p_rnos where guys are rough and the gals are supposedly enjoying that treatment.  Black stated that the song was something of a, for want of a better word, tutorial.
Um…yeah…if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property in Indiana I want to sell you…
See, the song is about doing something TO her….
…it’s as if she doesn’t have a brain or mouth to tell the guy what she prefers. The song gives this away with the final lines–“fuck her hard”…yeah, you pretty much lose all credibility with that line.
Secondly, Black assumes that people who watch p_rnos actually care what their partner wants—-not likely.  P-rnos objectify not only women, but men as well…it’s all about the physical, not the spiritual.  It’s devoid of connection….it diminishes the worth of each human being.  Not to mention the voyeuristic aspect…it’s like spying on a couple in the most intimate encounters.
It’s devoid of the spiritual and anytime one does that, without consideration of another human being, you’re going towards the dark side.
Monsanto’s toadies…
organic consumers has this link up to the toadies willing to do Monsanto’s bidding.
From the article:
Only food packers and processors will be effected. Farmers and grocers are not responsible for food labels. Farmers of crops that can be genetically engineered are already aware of what they’re growing. Genetically engineered seed is patented, branded and marketed as GMO.
More on the GMO labeling fight. (hat tip to organic consumers)
Oregon is also getting in the fight.
Onto other environmental issues–
The Japan nuclear nightmare might not be “over” as they would like to proclaim.  This article is pretty depressing….”Chernobyl on steroids.”  Makes you feel all warm and cozy inside…/snark
Farm bill 2012
Environmental Working Group’s take on Farm Bill 2012. (hat tip to organic consumers)
Instead, legislators created an expensive new entitlement program (called “shallow loss”) that guarantees nearly 90 percent of the income of farm businesses already enjoying record profits. It also leaves untouched a bloated $9-billion-a-year crop insurance program that pays about 60 percent of farmers’ crop insurance premiums, no matter how large the farm, and sends billions to crop insurance companies and their agents.
Most of the benefits of these proposed programs would flow to the big five commodity crops (corn, soy, cotton, rice and wheat) that provide feed for livestock, raw material for processed food and corn ethanol fuel for our cars. Not only would these proposals be highly inequitable and wasteful, but the new revenue guarantees, combined with unlimited insurance subsidies and high crop prices, will create powerful new incentives for growers to plow up fragile wetlands and grasslands and erase many of farming’s recent environmental gains.
I like that it at least adds monies for food stamp recipients to purchase locally grown food at farmer’s markets.  Great idea.  I actually made the suggestion to our housing authority folks to help us get some land to plant our own vegetables to raise organically.  *crickets*
Afghan killings, the poor, bankers, etc.
Common dreams has this link up on yet another killing of innocent Afghanis’ who were minding their own business. Meanwhile, support for the war from the people who are paying for it, is at a new low.  Where’s my representation, again…?
~~~~~~~~~~

Meanwhile, the repubs continue their “Eat Shit” campaign against the poor, elderly, and disabled in this country…because, you know, we have to be over in Afghanistan or whatever country has our oil in it, and we can’t be bothered with either creating jobs or feeding people if there are no decent paying jobs available so they can feed themselves….

The comments section brings up the involuntary servitude of the Prisons for Fun and Profit scheme.

The most telling paragraph is this one in the Reuters clip:

The Ryan bill also takes aim at financial reforms, eliminating the government’s powers to shut down large financial institutions, as well as cutting funding for the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A tort reform plan to end frivolous lawsuits included in the measure would lead to lower health care costs, according the CBO.

There is the heart of this, folks.  I’m reading The Indebted Society by James Medoff and Andrew Harless in which they assert that the economy of this country has been manipulated by the bankers/financial institutions for their own benefit.  Bankers need low wages so that people will borrow.  The book stated that wages have remained stagnant (which we already knew) and that people were borrowing just to maintain their lifestyles as far back as the eighties.  However, those things they were borrowing money for–luxury items–were not necessary for life and if they had to let them go back to the bank for lack of payment it wasn’t a big hardship.  However, with this current economic situation, the borrowing was not for luxury items, but just to survive–they refinanced their homes, or borrowed on credit cards to buy groceries and needed items…that sort of thing.  And that is why we saw so many folks “hit the wall”.  Their wages were no longer able to meet the very basics of life.

Medoff and Harless are blaming the Federal Reserve for not wanting inflation to rise–bankers don’t like inflation because it hurts their bottom line.  And they heavily influence the Fed, as much as the Fed would like to deny it.    Medoff and Harless say that there has been too much emphasis on consumption, and not enough on investment.

~~~~~~~~~~
And, just to shed light on the media campaign by the sociopaths–I was flipping through the radio the other night, and there was Sean Hannity.
Hannity actually made the claim that “socialist spending has gotten us into this economy.”   Say whaaat?  No, it’s not taxing the top 1% at a fair tax rate, and even reducing their taxes while starting not one, not two, but three military conflicts and/or wars, it’s feeding the poor and the elderly!  God these people drive me crazy.
Oh, and they’re quick to bring God into the conversation to justify their un-Jesus-like selfishness:
Overheard on a rightwing station here in FW (they’re pretty much all rightwing, just some to a lesser degree)–
“Be obedient to God–get out and vote.  Be obedient to God–politically you’re either conservative or liberal.  You have to decide which way is obedient to God. ”
Yeah, so wouldn’t following  “Thou Shalt Not Kill” and “Thou Shalt Not Covet thy neighbors’ stuff” (this includes oil, folks) be obedient to God?   How about “Do unto others as you would have done unto you?”
