When I first started reading this, I thought the third victim was lying in a hospital bed. But as I kept reading, I realized that wasn’t the case. He was exposed to MERS and developed antibodies–but did not develop symptoms requiring hospitalization—showing that his immune system is functioning properly.
I’m not sure what to make of the article–they’re saying that is was transmitted through what appears to be casual contact, but had previously stated that transmission was through intimate contact.
They once again miss an opportunity to inform about the third victim’s diet and toxic load that are crucial factors in immune health and are important factors in why he was able to develop antibodies and fight off the infection.
Reflections on Brown
Joanne’s comment is poignant. She encapsulates the wonder of that time–and how taboos were being broken.
I am writing this from my hospital bed. I am at a rehab center after getting a total knee replacement. I keep thinking how dumb I was. I didn’t hold the railing as I went downstairs and landed full-force on my knee, tearing out every major ligament. Now there is some titanium thing in there, a long row of metal staples, and standing on that leg is painful, almost as painful as bending it.
All day today, perhaps to distract myself from the pain, I have been thinking about the Brown decision. This hospital makes me think of how much change I have seen in my lifetime. Most of the change is because of the Brown decision. I look around, and both the staff and the patients are a mini-UN. My main physical therapist is a statuesque, beautiful black woman. I endured my training today on the same large mat…

Pit bull seized after allegedly attacking Shih Tzu in north Edmonton
This is why people are leery of pitbulls–it took three people to get this dog to let go. This is a known aspect of their personality–they don’t let go once they latch on. Plus they have powerful jaws that can cut deep.
This story hits close to home, as we have had problems from two owners allowing their dogs to roam the neighborhood, when by law, they are supposed to be on a leash. Whenever I take the doggie out, she is always on a leash.
I wouldn’t care about the dogs running loose if they weren’t so aggressive. Two of them have come into our yard and have bitten our dog. Fortunately, it was on a spot where she had a growth, so it wasn’t enough to seek out emergency vet care, but the idea that they would gang up on her–with me standing there–is unnerving. They’re big dogs–one is part boxer and the other is a Dalmation mix. They are aggressive towards people, as well.
We’ve called the animal control officer several times. The dogs are still running loose. I can’t even take Pookie out for a walk around the neighborhood without concern that she is going to be attacked. I took my pepper spray with me last time, just in case. But it makes for an anxious time for something that is usually a pleasant walk.
The problem is not with the dogs so much as it is with the irresponsible owners who couldn’t care less about others’ rights or the damage their dogs can do to other dogs.
A Reader Explains the Purpose of Charter School Waiting Lists and Lotteries
I commented at Diane’s blog to Chiara:
I can’t agree more with what you’ve written. This sentence in particular really struck me:
“It’s a wasteful and dumb advertising arms race, and it’s only going to escalate.”
It has become an advertising agency’s dream. We can’t get away from advertisers, wherever we go–so this would be just another golden opportunity to twist the perception of parents and the public as a whole. It’s all about advertising with flashy lights and colors instead of offering something of substance.
A reader left this comment:
**************************
I worked in the front office of a charter school for two years. We marketed heavily in the neighborhood and would get hundreds of applications for a school that had anywhere from 30-40 seats available in Kindergarten and 0-2 seats per class available in grades 1 and up. I remember the crestfallen looks on parents’ faces when it was announced at the admissions lottery that there were no seats open in a class and that the lottery would determine the order of the waiting list.
I once recommended to the principal that we stop taking applications after a certain point. I had two reasons for suggesting this: 1) We were giving families false hope, as anyone other than the first five to ten on the waiting list had no realistic chance of getting in, and 2) We could make better use of the time…

Rahm escalates the war with the City’s public school principals.
God Bless the Chicago Teachers Union, the Principals, the involved parents…
Clarice Berry, President of the Chicago Principals Association. A shill for the union?
A few days ago the principal at Blaine elementary school on the City’s north side blasted Rahm Emanuel as a bully.
First with a piece on the op-ed page of the Sun-Times.
Then with a blistering appearance on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight.
In the Sun-Times’ piece Troy A. LaRaviere wrote, “I did not travel across an ocean and risk my life to defend American freedoms only to return and relinquish those freedoms to an elected official and his appointed board of education.”
Damn.
In response Rahm’s political adviser John Kupper attacked the Sun-Times for publishing the op-ed piece and then attacked the President of the Chicago Principal and Administrators Association for being a union shill.
Referring to LaRaviere, Kupper wrote, “First, this guy got a full page in the Sun-Times on Saturday. Now, a story as well? When does…
