Sinixt Marilyn James. Sinixt elder Marilyn James, sentenced to 14 days house arrest for defending her people’s territory.

by  Greg Nesteroff – Nelson Star, June 24, 2014

Marilyn James, a Slocan Valley resident and local Sinixt leader, was sentenced to 14 days house arrest this morning after a BC Supreme Court judge found her in criminal contempt, but she immediately signalled she would not comply with the terms.

“Take me [to jail] now,” James told Justice Mark McEwan moments after he finished reading his judgement. “I will not stay in my home for two weeks.”  James and Dennis Zarelli were arrested on Perry Ridge on March 4 after McEwan continued an injunction application brought by Galena Contracting, a company hired by BC Timber Sales to extend a logging road. Zarelli earlier pled guilty and received the same sentence.

D.C. Insiders Monetize Experience, Join Ex-CNN Anchor to Attack School Teachers

It’s really hard to understand this kind of thinking. Why shouldn’t teachers have a union to represent them? Why shouldn’t anyone?

janresseger's avatarjanresseger

Not quite two years ago, theNY Times published what seemed to me a strange story.  Former CNN anchor, Campbell Brown had begun tweeting mean things about school teachers and attacking the unions who, she said, protect lewd behavior.   What did Campbell Brown have against school teachers and the NEA and AFT?

The NY Times piece then explained that Brown is married to Dan Senor, a foreign affairs advisor to then-presidential-candidate Mitt Romney, and that Senor also was serving on the board of Michelle Rhee’s national PAC, StudentsFirst, whose agenda includes attacks on the teachers unions that, according to StudentsFirst, put teachers first—ahead of students.

Campbell Brown had appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, written an op-ed that was published in the Wall Street Journal, and begun testifying in Albany against teachers unions.  While the teachers unions were quick to point out that they do not protect sexual predators…

Iraq and Walorski

Well, the radio station here has given Jackie Walorski even more free air time.  When I say that, I mean, not only do they “interview” her (by letting her go on and on without nary a hard question), but they repeatedly play soundbytes at every newscast.  And you never hear an opposing voice….you would think everyone in this entire area agrees with the opinions aired.

Well, hey, at least they have local news…

Anyway, the first newscast, the radio newsguy asks her how she would define success in Iraq.  Then he plays the soundbyte where she starts saying  (paraphrasing) “I don’t know how Obama defines success in Iraq.  It’s not news that ISIS is in Iraq.  It’s not news that fundamentalists are in Iraq. ”  She repeated that a couple more times.

Do you see where she completely avoided the question of her definition of success in Iraq?  Do we bomb the hell out of them?

What is her definition? She doesn’t tell us….because the minute she defines her idea, it would be much harder to backtrack on if  it failed.

Instead, she tries to get around it by bringing up Benghazi.  “We don’t want another Benghazi where people were left…”

Say what??

I’m sorry, I don’t get the connection.  Just another irritant to throw out there to assuage her rightwing bosses…

She also brings Saudi Arabia into the conversation–saying that they were financing the fundamentalists.  This is an inflammatory statement. By this account, it was not the intentions of the Saudis.  When President Obama expressed concern over Prince Bandar’s involvement, he was removed, and Prince Mohammad bin Nayef replaced him.  Prince Mohammad has been successful at quashing al Queda.  Just as all Americans don’t think alike, not all Saudis think alike.

And no, I’m not happy about what happened in Benghazi.  But I hold Hillary Clinton responsible for that.  She was warned.  They asked her for help.  But you know, she was impoverished and worried about her own finances…so you know, she can’t be held responsible. /snark

What difference does it make?

Yeah, that about says it all about the thoughtlessness.

The Onion: Charter Schools Lottery

(hat tip Diane Ravitch)

The Onion has their usual satirical take on the Charter Schools lottery “system”.

“Between small class sizes, longer school days, individualized instruction, and superior college admission rates, charters provide amazing opportunities for students who don’t enter a convulsive state, fall into a coma, stop breathing, and cease all bodily functions during the admissions process.”

bwahahahahahahaha.

Spot on.

It’s really sad that the article hits Charter snobbery at its heart….and the kids suffer most of all.

Six Nations on high alert as Haldimand council orders removal of blockade

They call McHale an attention seeker…but the fact they call Randy Fleming his follower leads me to believe he’s most likely a racist.
…probably has a white robe and pointy hat in his vehicle.

by Jim Windle, Two Row Times, June 24, 2014

CALEDONIA – Monday night, in camera, Haldimand Mayor Ken Hewitt and his council ordered the blockade put up to protect the Kanonhstaton land in Caledonia, to be removed ASAP.  Claiming the order was only to clean up the appearance from Highway #6 and to make the site “accessible to emergency access,” Hewitt insists that it was not council’s intention to cause any undue stress to anyone.

However many at Six Nations believe he is upping the ante after two recent provocative incidents created by Haldimand residents, Gary McHale and Randy Fleming a week apart which brought back memories of the 2006 shut down of Argyle Street.
