Canadians still being held

The Egyptian authorities are still holding two Canadians in jail.  They have sent word that they were beaten after asking for directions from police.    They had filmed the carnage of 102 people killed and Tarek offered medical assistance to the injured…and that seems to be why they are being held….but they have yet to go before a court.  Meanwhile, they are forced to sleep on concrete floors with cockroaches.

Don’t Be That Guy

A campaign is underway to bring date rape to the forefront.  It’s ironic that guys are finding the posters offensive….which is telling of how little men understand the devastation of rape.  I can tell you there isn’t a woman looking at the posters and not feeling anxiety and fear and vulnerability.

Someone put up posters protesting the campaign.  Note how the headline writer frames this as anti-feminist….instead of anti-woman.  It seems like a minor change of words, but has a huge impact because it’s easy to hate feminists, but if they say “woman”….that would be harder to justify.

And I think it is absolutely rape when a woman is intoxicated and is not able to give her consent.  And what kind of guy would take advantage of that??  Any decent man, no matter how much he desires her, is going to do the right thing and take her home and let her sleep it off.  If he wants to have sex with her, he will wait until she is sober.  A good man will want the woman to come to him willingly.

Details of violent history of George Zimmerman

Center for Media and Democracy has this up on the details of Zimmerman’s history of violence against women and interfering with a friend’s arrest.  I know the legal reasons for not putting Zimmerman’s past history up–the law wants to prosecute for the offense at hand, not for past offenses.  I think it comes from two ideas–one being you can’t be prosecuted for the same crime twice (double jeopardy) and two, the country has the view that everyone should get a second chance to change their ways…and a person should be viewed with a clean slate.

However, if they are going to bring up Trayvon’s past, it would seem the fair thing to do would to allow for Zimmerman’s past to be explored, as well.  There needs to be balance.
