Shutting down the media – Russia

Global News has this up on Russia blocking websites that favored the ouster of the Russia – leaning president.  More here on Ukrainian-Montrealers protesting outside Russian consulate.

This is another example of why we need Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press and how easily those in power can block them with the claim of national security.

As I listen to and read about the uprising/civil war/revolution in Ukraine, the words I hear the most are about economic factors and standing in the world.  The message is framed to turn the viewers’ gaze on how this is going to effect economic status.

And the sharks are circling…waiting to capitalize on the fallout.

Democracy seems to be an afterthought.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:  most folks around the world just want peace; to take care of their families; be healthy; have a purpose in life.  They want a government they elect to represent their wishes…not their economic benefactors.

Pando Daily had posted this a few days ago.  A billionaire funnels money to the opposition in Ukraine.  Ugh…

My first thought that this is wrong, wrong, wrong.

And then I thought of the dark money of the Kochs and Bill Gates, et al, and my second thought was “is it wrong to fund the underdog when up against dark money…?”

But I don’t know that the underdogs in Ukraine are for democracy or for authoritarianism a la Russia.  Reports have been that at first the original protesters were for democratic society, and then the conservatives, leaning towards authoritarianism, had taken over.

So that begs the question of who is Omidyar supporting? Does he care, as long as he can capitalize on whomever wins?

Comments section is lively and make the point that Pando is also supported by billionaires.

They responded with this article.  They make the claim the Omidyar is hands-on involved in the process, while their contributors cannot touch them with a 30-foot pole.

But back to the main theme of billionaires behind upheaval…

I come back to this is wrong, wrong, wrong in that however good intentions are…somebody always seems to twist things around to the opposite.  The dark ones always seem to manage to quash the emerging light.

If only politicians were put on poverty-level wages…then we would be governed by those truly serving out of duty instead of out of their own self-serving interests.  You’d see a mass exodus from government positions…

The mother of the dying child speaks out

Ken Previtti (Reclaim Reform) has a follow up to the mother whose child was in hospice and the state of Florida was demanding he be tested.   Keep the kleenex handy.

Godspeed to her and her family.

Heartless creeps.

The Fourth Amendment

…is the right to be let alone.  The right to have privacy from the government unless there is a court order stating there is probable cause (there is evidence you did something against the law).

It should also be fiercely enforced for whistleblowers.…a democracy depends on it.

The case against Hillary Clinton as President

Ralph Nader has this up on the actions of Hillary Clinton and why she would not be a good President.  I heart Ralph and wrote his name on a ballot once, along with 26 other souls in my republican stronghold small town.

…former Secretary of State Clinton ordered U.S. officials to spy on top UN diplomats including Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon, and those from the United Kingdom. She ordered her emissaries around the world to obtain DNA data, iris scans and fingerprints along with credit card and frequent flier numbers. Not only was this a clear violation of the 1946 UN convention, but after admitting what happened she didn’t even make a public apology to the affected parties.

~~~~~`
Big Brother, meet Big Sister…of course Hillary would not make an apology….she clearly feels she did nothing wrong.  Stunning.  Absolutely stunning the hubris of this politician.
Nader also notes her actions getting us into Libya with no Congressional approval.
Like I’ve said before, I’m sick of Bushes and Clintons in the White House.  They have come to believe they are entitled to the position, for one.  For another, their policies, along with Ronald Reagan, have led this country into the pit it is in now.  How anyone could vote for her or support her after the revelations of what she has done is beyond me.
Nader links to the Nixon and Kissinger article in the NY Times, as Hillary Clinton is best buds with Henry Kissinger.  Another article on Kissinger and Nixon here with more details.
If you recall, he was in the I’m-not-running-for-president video of Hillary Clinton, along with Benjamin Netanyahu:
…and Tony Blair..? Of the Downing Street Memo…?
Yes, yes, he is yet another example of ethics and humanity. /snark
The NSA uses intelligence to interfere with trade
Well, now, just when you think things can’t get any worse with the NSA…they continually amaze one with their lack of ethics.
Liaison officials asked the NSA general counsel’s office, on behalf of the Australians, for guidance about the spying. The bulletin notes only that the counsel’s office “provided clear guidance” and that the Australian eavesdropping agency “has been able to continue to cover the talks, providing highly useful intelligence for interested U.S. customers,” according to the Times story.
…and the question of the hour is…would any of this come to light if Edward Snowdon had not brought it to light?
And yet another example why we need diversity in media.  The whistleblowers of the world will not get a chance to be heard if media continues to be consolidated into a few privileged hands….
Tweeting…is a threat…?
I had to watch this video (top) twice because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing–from a distance, it looks like a couple talking…he even has his arm around her like a good friend, and then *boom* he starts to haul her off.  She showed no weapon, was not yelling or otherwise threatening anyone…I was just stunned.
Even more stunning? How everyone else just allowed it to happen.  She had every right to be there and Harper and his goons had no right to interfere with that.
In the second video, she is saying that she wasn’t even tweeting–that she did not have her phone.  So they’re lying on top of taking away her rights?
Tweeting is not a threat.  Freedom of Speech is not a threat.
The Education Show
Seriously, these folks are running schools by script.  Unbelievable. (from Diane Ravitch’s blog)
As Diane says, it’s dangerous to speak out….but this has been going on in the private sector for quite some time–somehow, one’s right to Freedom of Speech stops at the corporate door.
So now it has reached the Education doors….and that is why Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, et al, have tried to destroy teacher’s unions.  It’s much harder to fire a teacher who speaks out against corruption when that teacher belongs to a strong union that stands behind her or him.  That’s kind of the bully playbook—separate people into aloneness, and attack.  It’s much easier to take one down than a group.
More on Education--this post is just sickening.  Depressing as hell that Pearson has now monopolized the United States Education system.
This post from Mom of Five is alarming:
My daughter’s principal just informed me that she doubts any California district will ever order a textbook again: Everything bought in the future will be digital. Her school has pretty much phased out textbooks already and at my mom’s high school the district just got rid of over 4,000 books from the library. Even though the high school has just been built (3 weeks ago) I find it sad that the library is very small. Instead, there are numerous “student lounges” where kids go to hang out.
~~~~~~~

Really disturbing.  Of course, the technology terrorists will wrap this in a “progress” blanket to quash any objections to it.  We’ve been sold this line of garbage that anything new in technology is automatically a good thing and means we are “progressing”.  What does that mean, exactly?  They don’t really say.  All it is is something “new”.  They know that marketers put “new” and “improved” on can labels so that consumers will buy it…doesn’t matter that it’s the same stuff as before and “improved” is a subjective word.

And if you notice the comment of teachingeconomist, the resident troll, he uses the word “nostalgic” as a code word for “you’re so far behind the times clinging to the past…”  to shut people up…

I see farther down the comments that Mom of Five had the same sentiment:

Momoffive

Oh yeah, I forgot the best part…she let me know that the reason I’m having a problem with all this is because “us older parents” have a difficult time with change and moving into the global 21st century.”

Diane has probably blogged on this, but with all the information out there, I have trouble keeping up–Valerie Strauss (God love her) has this up on the Bush connection to this education fiasco.

More here from an old post at dailykos.  I think I may have posted this before–but doesn’t hurt to repost…easier to keep up with the octopus of education $$.

The right to be let alone

Warrior Publications has this up on the Munduruku People fighting the centuries old fight against the dark side.  I will never understand someone thinking they can just go and take what they want with no regards to the rights of others.

This article doesn’t mention it, but mercury is also a factor in gold mining.  It was wise of them to protect their land and kick them off.

If you want to know more about the indigenous fight to be let alone, see Joe Kane’s book, Savages.
