Stratospheric Welsbach seeding for reduction of global warming AbstractA method is described for reducing atmospheric or global warming resulting from the presence of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, i.e., from the greenhouse effect. Such gases are relatively transparent to sunshine, but absorb strongly the long-wavelength infrared radiation released by the earth. The method incudes the step of seeding the layer of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere with particles of materials characterized by wavelength-dependent emissivity. Such materials include Welsbach materials and the oxides of metals which have high emissivity (and thus low reflectivities) in the visible and 8-12 micron infrared wavelength regions.

Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a method for the reduction of global warming resulting from the greenhouse effect, and in particular to a method which involves the seeding of the earth’s stratosphere with Welsbach-like materials. Global warming has been a great concern of many environmental scientists. Scientists believe that the greenhouse effect is responsible for global warming. Greatly increased amounts of heat-trapping gases have been generated since the Industrial Revolution. These gases, such as CO.sub.2, CFC, and methane, accumulate in the atmosphere and allow sunlight to stream in freely but block heat from escaping (greenhouse effect). These gases are relatively transparent to sunshine but absorb strongly the long-wavelength infrared radiation released by the earth. Most current approaches to reduce global warming are to restrict the release of various greenhouse gases, such as CO.sub.2, CFC, and methane. These imply the need to establish new regulations and the need to monitor various gases and to enforce the regulations. One proposed solution to the problem of global warming involves the seeding of the atmosphere with metallic particles. One technique proposed to seed the metallic particles was to add the tiny particles to the fuel of jet airliners, so that the particles would be emitted from the jet engine exhaust while the airliner was at its cruising altitude. While this method would increase the reflection of visible light incident from space, the metallic particles would trap the long wavelength blackbody radiation released from the earth. This could result in net increase in global warming. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method for reduction of global warming due to the greenhouse effect which permits heat to escape through the atmosphere. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A method is disclosed for reducing atmospheric warming due to the greenhouse effect resulting from a greenhouse gases layer. The method comprises the step of seeding the greenhouse gas layer with a quantity of tiny particles of materials characterized by wavelength-dependent emissivity or reflectivity, in that said materials have high emissivities in the visible and far infrared wavelength regions and low emissivity in the near infrared wavelength region. Such materials can include the class of materials known as Welsbach materials. The oxides of metal, e.g., aluminum oxide, are also suitable for the purpose. The greenhouse gases layer typically extends between about seven and thirteen kilometers above the earth’s surface. The seeding of the stratosphere occurs within this layer. The particles suspended in the stratosphere as a result of the seeding provide a mechanism for converting the blackbody radiation emitted by the earth at near infrared wavelengths into radiation in the visible and far infrared wavelength so that this heat energy may be reradiated out into space, thereby reducing the global warming due to the greenhouse effect. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS These and other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of an exemplary embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 illustrates a model for the heat trapping phenomenon, i.e., the greenhouse effect. FIG. 2 is a graph illustrating the intensity of sunlight incident on earth and of the earth’s blackbody radiation as a function of wavelength. FIG. 3 is a graph illustrating an ideal emissivity versus wavelength function for the desired particle material. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT FIG. 1 shows a model for the heat-trapping (greenhouse effect) phenomenon. It is assumed that the greenhouse gases are concentrated at altitudes between y=0 (at some altitude Y.sub.1, above the earth’s surface) and y=1. Regardless of the sunshine reflected back into space, i.sub.1 and i.sub.2 denote the shortwavelength sunlight energies that are absorbed by the earth’s surface and the greenhouse gases, respectively. Available data shows that i.sub.1 =0.45 i.sub.sol and i.sub.2 =0.25 i.sub.sol, where i.sub.sol is the total flux from the sun. The short wavelength sunlight heats up the greenhouse gases and the earth surface, and this energy is eventually reradiated out in the long wavelength infrared region. FIG. 2 is a graph illustrating the intensity of sunlight and the earth’s blackbody radiation as a function of wavelength. As illustrated, some 30% of the sunlight energy is in the near infrared region. The earth’s blackbody radiation, on the other hand, is at the far infrared wavelength. Referring again to FIG. 1, I.sub.s, I.sub.+, I.sub.-, I.sub.g and I.sub.e represent the fluxes in the infrared wavelength region, where I.sub.s and I.sub.g are the fluxes reradiated by the greenhouse gases toward the sky and ground, respectively; I.sub.e is the flux reradiated by the earth; and I.sub.+ and I.sub.- are fluxes within the gases radiating toward the space and ground, respectively. I.sub.+ and I.sub.- are functions of y, e.g., I.sub.+ (0) is the I.sub.+ flux at y=0. Considering the principles of energy conservation and continuity at boundaries, the following relationships are obtained: where R.sub.o, R.sub.l and R are the reflectivities at the y=0 and y=1 boundaries and at the earth’s surface. I.sub.BB (T.sub.e) is the blackbody radiation flux at the earth’s temperature T.sub.e. Within the greenhouse gases’ layer, the energy equations are where I.sub.BB (T.sub.g) is the blackbody radiation flux at the greenhouse gases’ temperature T.sub.g, and .alpha. is the absorption coefficient of the gases. The solutions of equations 8 and 9 are given by equations 10 and 11: To illustrate the effects of R.sub.o and R.sub.l on the green-house effect, the extreme case is considered wherein a high concentration of greenhouse gases has strong absorption in the infrared region; that is, for y=1, e.sup.-.alpha.l approaches 0. Then, using Equations 3 and 4, the relationships of Equations 12 and 13 are obtained. From Equations 5 and 7, or From Equations 2 and 1, or Combining Equations 14 and 15, the relationship of Equation 16 is obtained. Finally, Equation 6 gives the blackbody radiation from the earth’s surface in terms of i.sub.1 and i.sub.2 and the three reflectivities: or To achieve a lower temperature of the earth, (considering i.sub.1, i.sub.2 and R as constants), it is desirable to make R and R.sub.l as small as possible. Known refractory materials have a thermal emissivity function which is strongly wavelength dependent. For example, the materials may have high emissivity (and absorption) at the far infrared wavelengths, high emissivity in the visible wavelength range, and very low emissivity at intermediate wavelengths. If a material having those emissivity characteristics and a black body are exposed to IR energy of equal intensity, the selective thermal radiator will emit visible radiation with higher efficiency (if radiation cooling predominates), i.e., the selective thermal radiator will appear brighter than the black body. This effect is known as the Welsbach effect and is extensively used in commercial gas lantern mantles. Welsbach materials have the characteristic of wavelength-dependent emissivity (or reflectivity). For example, thorium oxide (ThO.sub.2) has high emissivities in the visible and far IR regions but it has low emissivity in the near IR region. So, in accordance with the invention, the layer of greenhouse gases is seeded with Welsbach or Welsbach-like materials which have high emissivities (and thus low reflectivities) in the visible and 8-12 micrometer infrared regions, which has the effect of reducing R.sub.o and R.sub.l while introducing no effect in the visible range. A desired material for the stratospheric seeding has a reflection coefficient close to unity for near IR radiation, and a reflection coefficient close to zero (or emissity close to unity) for far IR radiation. FIG. 3 is a graph illustrating an ideal emissivity versus wavelength function for the desired material. Another class of materials having the desired property includes the oxides of metals. For example, aluminum oxide (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) is one metal oxide suitable for the purpose and which is relatively inexpensive. It is presently believed that particle sizes in the ten to one hundred micron range would be suitable for the seeding purposes. Larger particles would tend to settle to the earth more quickly. The particles in the required size range can be obtained with conventional methods of grinding and meshing. It is believed that the number of particles n.sub.d per unit area in the particle layer should be defined by Equation 18: where 1 is the thickness of the particle layer and .sigma..sub.abs is the absorption coefficient of the particles at the long IR wavelengths. One crude estimate of the density of particles is given by Equation (19): where c is the speed of light, m is the average particle mass, e is the electron charge, and w is the absorption line width in sec.sup.-1. The greenhouse gases are typically in the earth’s stratosphere at an altitude of seven to thirteen kilometers. This suggests that the particle seeding should be done at an altitude on the order of 10 kilometers. The particles may be seeded by dispersal from seeding aircraft; one exemplary technique may be via the jet fuel as suggested by prior work regarding the metallic particles. Once the tiny particles have been dispersed into the atmosphere, the particles may remain in suspension for up to one year. It is understood that the above-described embodiment is merely illustrative of the possible specific embodiments which may represent principles of the present invention. Other arrangements may readily be devised in accordance with these principles by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. * * * * *
Protests in Gainsville here. One protestor notes the intensity of the sun has gotten worse with the chemtrails. I agree — it was especially bad in Fort Wayne with the chemtrail spraying. It normally doesn’t hit the 90s in June, but in all the years I was there, it hit 90 early in June and it was exhaustive heat. Given my already toxic system, it was probably worse for me than those whom aren’t as stricken. However, there were an awful lot of people there with respiratory illnesses. People my age or within ten years were having issues just breathing. As has been pointed out with vaccination, I have never seen so many sick people. As I’ve said before, mercury poisoned folk are the canaries in the coal mine, and we are much more sensitive to this stuff–and that includes Electro-magnetic fields (EMF’s). When I heard that the Navy yard shooter, Aaron Alexis, thought microwaves were being used against him, I wondered if he were toxic and experiencing the personal hell that they cause? Just recently, while in a classroom with a “smart board” (yet another electronic gadget for classrooms that really does not help the kids to learn but gee whiz look at what it can do!), I had the overhead LCD projector on, plus the computer, which is wired into the smartboard, and the “wand” that the teacher uses to project onto the screen. I had to shut both the wand and the LCD off because I became severely nauseated and my adrenals were starting to weaken–I was afraid they would crash. Within a half hour after turning them off, my nausea went away.
Protests in London. They are asserting that it is a program for population control. You know, before I read the paper on vaccines with hormones in them to cause sterilization, I would have said “no way” to this assertion. Now? Well, let’s just say the jury is still out on that. I’m not saying they are, but keeping an open mind.
An interesting video here that states they were found to contain aluminum, barium, and another substance that was not there previously. Note that they were started in the late 90s, which would be under….wait for it….Bill Clinton’s Administration.
I remembered that Bill Gates was connected to chemtrails, but my memory was fuzzy. This page explains his once again playing the Knight on a White Horse to save us all but in reality causing more harm and destruction.
Finally, a link off of the last link — a U.S. veteran training in environmental toxins, speaks out on her observations. I’m not a fan of Infowars, but this report does hold valuable information. I was with them until the end where she stated they would be carrying guns. Yeah, not a fan of that….
Diane Ravitch mentions a link to Noel Hammitt’s blog on the correlation between poverty and how well a student does in school. She taught Noel as a student undergrad.
Note: Noel Hammitt has copyrighted this material, but kindly allows liberal use of it as long as copyright is noted.
The first chart is stunning in how the “F” grade corresponds with the kids in poverty. Again–they are trying to blame teachers for something that is out of their control–and the biggest factor in how well a child does in school….poverty.
From this chart it appears that there is a powerful pattern in the relationship between the concentrations of poverty in schools and the assigned letter grades for schools. However, we should note that for four years Louisiana put out a report that highlighted High-Poverty High Performing Schools, which suggested that there are, perhaps, many schools that defy this pattern. After carefully examining the lists, which reported higher numbers of schools each succeeding year, with 56 schools in the 2011 release, we noted that many of the schools actually had a lower percentage of students qualifying for free meals than the state average. In addition, most of the schools were magnet schools or schools where Gifted/Talented programs were masking lower test scores for other groups of students in the schools. Finally, there were schools like Lake Forest Elementary, in New Orleans, that had extensive application and testing procedures that eliminated low-scoring students from the schools. We also noted that there were no schools that had been on the list every year. Not one school out of over 1300 schools in the state that had overcome the challenges of poverty every year.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
We note that although the private schools seem to have an advantage on the scores, they enroll very few special education students, and they get to select their students.
~~~~~~~~~~~
NAEP scores can be useful checks against a natural tendency of states, districts, and schools to focus on teaching to the test, because NAEP assessments are much more difficult to game or teach to than state level tests. An example of this can be found in states where 90 percent or more of students receive passing scores in their state at the basic level, when only 20 or 30 percent of their students are passing NAEP at the Basic Level.
~~~~~~~~~~
I think this last quote is really important for the non-teacher to understand what is going on with testing. As we have learned, tests can be manipulated in that the teacher is forced to teach so the children can pass the test so the schools will not be penalized either by closing them or denying them their federal tax dollars through programs such as Race to the Bottom…er, I mean, Top….so the assessment is muddied. The national assessment appears to circumvent that and gives a true picture of how the children are doing.
Noel notes that a child in poverty can also make high grades–he emphasizes that one should understand this and not have low expectations of these children. I agree. The problem isn’t that the child is not capable….but they have so many obstacles to overcome every day that get in the way.
Finally, the biggest point of the paper is that just because a school is called “failing” doesn’t necessarily mean that the kids and teachers are stoopid. Again, parents and the public need to ask how that school was assessed, is poverty a huge problem with the students?
Well, this sounded refreshing by the title. But I’ll hold my applause until they actually put their money where their mouths are and get off their duffs.
This sentence is why I have my doubts:
“What we’re trying to get is the balance between awareness and alarmist,” said Dr. Jeanne Conry, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
~~~~~~~~`
We are waaaay past alarm. If you’re not alarmed, you haven’t been paying attention. This is decades past due! They knew this back in the sixties, so spare me the tender steps and get on it already. And don’t act all concerned with women’s health when you’re willing to poison them with vaccination….and of course, you’re not willing to treat poor women with whatever they can pay you.
I cannot believe they are recommending fish, especially catfish, tuna and salmon. This report states catfish are okay, but I have read in other reports that they are high in mercury. Fish can be high not only in mercury but toxins from pesticides [PDF} and other farm run off. I don’t go along with the statement that this is good news in regards to standards for drinking water. I cannot drink tap water because of the contaminants. Note that they are STILL finding DDT decades after being banned. And because of “budgetary restraints” glyphosate (Monsanto’s RoundUP) was not measured. This should alarm everyone.
…and they’re asking the American Chemical Society for its input? A group that makes its living off of chemicals that are toxic to us and destroy our immune systems? Seriously??
And in the we-are-our-own-worst-enemy category–the report states there are high concentrations of chemicals from home lawn and garden use in streams, etc. in the urban setting. I’ve told the story before, but it bears repeating–there was a couple who had the perfect yard–grass was unnaturally green and not a “weed” in sight. They sprayed for weeds frequently, I’m told. They had not one but two dogs die of cancer. Yep.
So…yeah, we have our own culpability for contributing to the toxic soup in pursuit of a perfect yard. And perfect looking vegetables and fruits…who cares if they’re nutritious or not….kind of like our state of society right now, eh? We judge more by the outside packaging than by what is on the inside….
While we’re looking the other way at issues that should be non-issues….another sneaky thing in the House version of the Ag part of the funding of the government is to continue the Monsanto Protection Act. Yep.
From Organic Consumers:
URGENT: House Passes Monsanto Protection Act. Ask Your Senators to Stop It!
Dear Supporter,
On Friday, September 20, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the Continuing Resolution (H.J.RES.59), a bill to keep the government running through December 15. The bill will force a showdown with the Senate because it includes a provision to defund the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.
But the Continuing Resolution is controversial for another reason. It extends the Monsanto Protection Act, officially referred to as the Farmers Assurance Provision, a law that gives biotech firms immunity from federal prosecution for illegally growing GMO crops.
Please call your Senators today and ask them to pass a clean version of the Continuing Resolution, one that doesn’t extend the Monsanto Protection Act.
You can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected with your Senator. Or find individual senators’ phone numbers here.
You can say:
“I’m calling to ask the Senator to oppose the Farmers Assurance Provision, sometimes referred to as the Monsanto Protection Act, and to vote no on any bill, including the Continuing Resolution, which includes the provision.”
If you want to go into more detail, you can add:
“New GMOs aren’t regulated enough as it is. Even the American Medical Association complains that the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t safety test new GMOs for human health risks before allowing them on the market for human consumption. The AMA last year recommended that GMOs undergo mandatory premarket safety testing.
“The U.S. Department of Agriculture does conduct a mandatory review of new GMOs, but not for human health risks.
“The USDA is notorious for ignoring the impact new GMOs will have on organic and non-GMO farmers who experience serious economic losses when their crops are contaminated.
“In recent years, the courts have had to step in and stop the planting of new GMOs. The courts did this by requiring that the USDA complete a thorough Environmental Impact Statement before approving a controversial crop. The Monsanto Protection Act strips the court of its constitutional power to review executive branch decisions, which means the courts can no longer intervene in order to protect the public. Now, the USDA can rubber-stamp new GMOs and, even if serious harm could result, the court can’t stop them from being planted.
“I hope the Senator will work to stop the Monsanto Protection Act from being extended past September 30 and vote against any bill that includes it.”
Background
The Monsanto Protection Act was first passed in March, when it was quietly and without debate slipped into the earlier version of the Continuing Resolution, a bill to fund the government through September 30. As Politico reporter David Rogers explained in his Monsanto Protection Act exposé, “Big Agriculture Flexes its Muscle,” the Monsanto-friendly rider was never voted on. Rogers, a seasoned political reporter, described how the Monsanto Protection Act became law “with little or no floor debate and in a period of turmoil.”
The backroom deal that made the Monsanto Protection Act law generated a public backlash. It was the subject of a Daily Showepisode. And it helped spawn a worldwide March against Monsanto, reported on by the New York Times.
Because the Senate never voted on the Monsanto Protection Act, we don’t know where all of the senators stand on the issue. But here’s what we do know:
• Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) conspired with Monsanto lobbyists to write the law.
• Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), chair of the full Senate Appropriations Committee, publicly apologized for letting the Monsanto Protection Act slip through. But, she said, she had a responsibility to avoid a government shutdown.
• Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), tried for a vote to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act during the Senate Farm Bill debate.
• Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) blocked Merkley’s amendment.
• Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D- Mich.) promised Merkley that the amendment wouldn’t be renewed without a vote.
Can Sen. Stabenow keep her promise? We’ll find out this week when the Senate debates the new Continuing Resolution. While the focus will be on the House’s provision to defund Obamacare, we need every senator to know that it is not acceptable to include the Monsanto Protection Act in the new bill.
Please call your senators today. Ask them to reject extending the Monsanto Protection Act and vote no on the Continuing Resolution unless this blatant giveaway to the biotech industry is removed.
…that the folks on food stamps can also be adjunct professors. This has got to be one of the most sobering stories I’ve heard yet. What the mainstream media won’t tell you is that college educated WORKING people are also in dire straits because the top 1% are taking it all for themselves, as we see in this case.
Note the comment where some administrator in a hospital gave herself a 90k bonus while paying low wages.
And other comments are blasting the university for her extremely low un-livable wages. Good God.
Many ask why she didn’t have Medicare/Soc. Security at her age? The article doesn’t tell us, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say she was probably making too much money as a professor for Social Security. I don’t know about Medicare, but assuming they also have limits on how much they will pay for certain conditions, and if this was the second time that Margaret Mary had cancer, she had probably reached those limits.
They also ask the question of her being on assistance (food stamps, I presume?) . Ooookay. Um, let me explain something to those who think that food stamps are some sort of panacea–they’re NOT. Even if she got food stamps, which we don’t know by this article, it still would not be enough. Jaysus H., $10,000 a year? That is less than a $1,000 per month, before taxes. Who can survive on that??
Here’s the op-ed from Daniel Kovalik, who may have been the last person to talk to her. What huge indignity for her (and anyone else who has to beg for food or medical care).
And here again we have the fight against unions for teachers…and a glaring point of why we need unionized teachers, because the administrators have their priorities in the wrong places (themselves and athletics):
While adjuncts at Duquesne overwhelmingly voted to join the United Steelworkers union a year ago, Duquesne has fought unionization, claiming that it should have a religious exemption. Duquesne has claimed that the unionization of adjuncts like Margaret Mary would somehow interfere with its mission to inculcate Catholic values among its students.
This would be news to Georgetown University — one of only two Catholic universities to make U.S. News & World Report’s list of top 25 universities — which just recognized its adjunct professors’ union, citing the Catholic Church’s social justice teachings, which favor labor unions.
What is truly, truly, incredible was the heartless act of the university in calling the police after it was discovered she was sleeping in her office because her electricity was shut off. Yeah, because Jesus would have tossed her out on her ass, too. /very snarky.
Lastly, let’s take a moment to acknowledge that Margaret Mary was a woman….women are more likely to be in poverty than men.
Statistically, women in America are more likely to be poor than men in all racial and ethnic backgrounds. With over 37 million people living in poverty, over half of them are adult single women. Surprisingly so, women in the U.S. are further behind in comparison to women in other areas of the world. This could be all connected to the gender wage gap, with women earning less money than their male counterparts, and the often expensive responsibility of raising children.
In a report entitled Living Below the Line: Economic Insecurity and America’s Families, lead authors Shawn McMahon and Jessica Horning found that 45 percent of American families live on incomes that fail to provide the basic economic security required to support their basic needs. In just four years, the overall financial insecurity rate rose from 38 percent to 45 percent with an increase in poverty of White children and unmarried couples. Children of color were also found at risk of economic security with more than three-quarters of Black children and three-quarters of Hispanic children facing poverty in their households.
Bill de Blasio is apparently blessed by the Clintons….he is in the circle.
Peter Beinart should do his freaking homework before writing such a long-winded article on politics….especially when it raises the hopes of those of us who are wise to the Clintons and want to see their grip on politics broken.
