Banned chemicals linked to autism **edited

Global News has a post up on an SFU (? university isn’t named) professor that has linked autism with Chlordane and flame retardant PBDE-28.

Chlordane was in use in the U.S. until 1988. It has been linked to testicular cancer, lymphoma, and leukemia.

It has more widespread indications of affecting the health, however:

The non-cancer health effects of chlordane compounds, which include migraines, respiratory infections, diabetes, immune-system activation, anxiety, depression, blurry vision, confusion, intractable seizures as well as permanent neurological damage,[13] may affect more people than cancer. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has defined a concentration of chlordane compounds of 20 ng/M3 as the Minimal Risk Level (MRLs). ATSDR defines Minimal Risk Level as an estimate of daily human exposure to a dose of a chemical that is likely to be without an appreciable risk of adverse non-cancerous effects over a specific duration of exposure.[14]

Good Grief, this stuff is uber toxic!  The fact that seizures and migraines are symptoms lends more credibility to it affecting neurological function…as in autism.  So…it’s not just mercury and heavy metals that can be linked to autism.  And multiple exposures of both just spells disaster, imo.

You know what’s missing from the wikipedia link?  The manufacturer(s). I found one of them here.  Big surprise, eh? /snark

When does Monsanto start to pay back for all the misery they have caused the world?  Anybody?

There’s a much better written article here.  Gah,the more I read, the more alarmed I get, as if I wasn’t alarmed enough.  It appears to be as persistent for remaining in the environment and not breaking down, just like DDT …

It is not known whether chlordane breaks down in most soils. If breakdown occurs, it is very slow. Chlordane is known to remain in some soils for over 20 years. Persistence is greater in heavy, clayey or organic soil than in sandy soil. Most chlordane is lost from soil by evaporation. Evaporation is more rapid from light, sandy soils than from heavy soils.

Half of the chlordane applied to the soil surface may evaporate in 2 or 3 days. Evaporation is much slower after chlordane penetrates into the soil. In water, some chlordane attaches strongly to sediment and particles in the water column and some is lost by evaporation. It is not known whether much breakdown of chlordane occurs in water or in sediment.

Chlordane breaks down in the atmosphere by reacting with light and with some chemicals in the atmosphere. However, it is sufficiently long lived that it may travel long distances and be deposited on land or in water far from its source.

More:

Finally, some chlordane may be left over from the pre-ban days. Old containers of material thought to contain chlordane should be disposed of carefully and contact with the skin and breathing vapors should be avoided.

~~~
Here’s what bothers me about this statement–what exactly does “dispose of” mean?  How should it be disposed of?
It’s just shuffling it from one area to another.  It’s not a solution.  It just doesn’t magically disappear.  It becomes a problem for the next hapless person who comes in contact with it, unaware of the danger. And that usually means poor people, who don’t know about their toxic environment and if they did, they don’t have the $$$ attention of politicians $$$ who can do something about removing it.
Truly, the only solution is not to allow these toxic substances into the environment to begin with.
Bad Whiskey, mental institutions; Andrea Yates
City Jackdaw has the reasons you could have been admitted to a mental institution in the 19th century.
Masturbation and, well, being a woman from all the “ailments” associated with being female.  Freud was an influence, I’m sure.
Note the reading of a novel was reason enough to be admitted! No doubt this was directed at a woman, because women were discouraged from educating themselves.  Truly, the medical profession said women would “shrink” their uterus if they went to college.  They based this genius on the observation that women who went to college were not as likely to have children, not have as many children.  Yep.
I wish I could say that the psychiatric profession has progressed passed the misogyny, but if you read the DSM, their diagnostic manual, it has “diseases” that describe the symptoms of being…a woman.  It’s a very vague description that has no reasoning behind it.
I was watching a documentary on Andrea Yates yesterday.  Her case always troubled me.  I felt at the time that she is mercury toxic for her to suddenly start acting mentally ill.
My intuition has been heightened by more clues — she became non-verbal (autistic symptoms) with her children, even though she performed regular duties such as fixing them lunch.  Her father had Alzheimer’s, so he and she were probably exposed to mercury (my belief that mercury and aluminum are direct causes of Alzheimer’s). Her father was of Irish ancestry–another strong clue of inability to detox mercury.
She began to act irrationally after the birth of her fourth child.  This is crucial because if she were already mercury burdened at her own birth (possibility),  and received Rho-Gam shots, she received more mercury via the shots.  After the fifth birth, she absolutely would have more toxicity and the mercury amount probably pushed her over the edge.
Those around her described her as loving before she became ill.  Her symptoms match mercury/heavy metal toxicity: anxiety, depression, autistic symptoms, bags under her eyes (adrenal fatigue/thyroid), self-mutilation,  and on top of that, the very drugs she was prescribed most likely caused more harm than good.
I hope that someone around her with some intellect will look into heavy metal poisoning as the root cause of her illness.  I just feel it in my gut.
Charter Schools Gravy Train
(hat tip to scathing purple musings)  Forbes, of all places, has this article up that pretty much summarizes all that is wrong with charter school profiteers.
As mentioned here before, the article notes that Bill Clinton allowed them to proliferate by giving them tax credits and not only that, but green cards for foreign investors.  Yep.
As I’m reading about the for-profit scheme and how the author notes that they have not been that profitable…I’m thinking of the “classes” being given to kids via video or online “learning”…so they don’t have to pay a teacher at all.  Or–they have one teacher to answer questions or grade tests for however many kids they can squeeze in….I don’t even know the answer to that and I’m not going to even try to guess.   They don’t really care, anyway, if the child is getting a good education…as long as it looks something like an education, they’re just fine with that…
Lastly, I’m even more impressed with public schools after reading this–the author notes that charter schools can pick and choose their students, so they should be showing better test scores than public…less than a third do that.
So…even with the students that are autistic or mentally challenged, the public schools still outdid the charters.  Here’s to the dedicated and beleaguered public school teachers….::clink::
Grain Brain
A discussion was started on the mercury support group about a member getting her mother to move in with her and get the horrible amalgams out of her mouth so she could detox.
I was happy for her and her mother.  I related to her that my mother suffered from Alzheimer’ s that I am almost positive she was a Celiac and mercury toxic. But unfortunately, my own self diagnosis came too late to help her. I tried to convince my siblings that she was Celiac. This was about six months before she passed. They were saying she was too far gone at that point, and I am still questioning that–hell it was worth a try.
The nurse at her doctor’s office practically laughed at me when I called to request the doctor investigate a possible Celiac diagnosis. I tried to explain to the nurse about the neurological connection to Celiac and mercury poisoning… she politely listened, but I could tell she thought I was a nut.
My mother continued to eat breads, cakes, and cookies.  My siblings were of the opinion that it was the one pleasure she had left in life…but my thinking was that pleasure was surely causing her illness.
Another member brought up the book, Grain Brain by neurologist David Perlmutter.  I haven’t read the book yet, but I did catch him on PBS yesterday.
What he said stunned me–that a *cough* scientific “fact” has been disproven:   That your brain does not regenerate brain cells.  It does.
Stunning–we have been taught that our brains cannot regenerate, but Dr. Perlmutter states that aerobic exercise turns on the genes responsible for brain cell regeneration.  He stated that DHA (fish oil) also does the same thing.    I had experienced this myself, prior to mercury poisoning–I noticed about six months after beginning aerobic exercise how much better I felt and how much better my brain functioned.  I started after the birth of my first child, and it was the only exercise that I enjoyed  (I always disliked sit ups, push ups, etc. …b-o-r-i-n-g.  And I disliked the competitive nature of gym class.  We had a teacher once that punished the side that lost–since one side always had to lose, it was a ridiculous punitive action that made me hate gym class.)
Anyway, Dr. Perlmutter was basically stating everything I had learned from Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride on the GAPS diet…grains are bad for you. Period.  I think Perlmutter goes into more detail about specific amounts of carbs to have…I’m just not comfortable with the mindset that one-size-fits-all.  I think we are too individualistic and medicine still does not recognize that.  They like to have us pigeonholed into neat little scientific packages when it has been shown, over and over again, that our bodies are unique and respond differently….as in the case of mercury poisoning…there are few symptoms that are alike for merc poisoning.  That is why it is so difficult for them to diagnose–they can’t seem to wrap their brains around many different symptoms–some physical, some neurological–coming from toxin exposure.
DN!
I don’t think democracynow could have put together a more emotional show than they did today.
The domestic violence segment is heartbreaking.  I don’t know how anyone can look at that woman’s injuries and ask her why she didn’t try to run away!  Who does that?!  (I’m really trying to restrain myself from using every choice expletive I know).  Given that she will either not have a job, or has one that pay is so low she cannot survive on her own, it will take nearly being beaten to death (or verbally abused to the point of the soul’s death), before she will even *think* of leaving.
I’m sure the documentary will explore the subject, but having not seen it, I can’t foresee that they will explore everything–the impact of toxins on rage; the circle of domestic violence, war, and domestic violence.  The interview mentions that the abuser was a body builder—red flag right there because of steroid use and other drugs that are known to produce aggressive feelings.
Secondly, mercury and other heavy metals can produce feelings of rage and apparently promote criminal behavior.  Since one can’t really escape mercury, because it’s everywhere, I think it should be standard to do hairtests on those charged with crimes.  One can only wonder at what we would find–and how detoxing someone acting in a criminal way could change their life to a positive one….
My biggest hope for the film is to gather all the evidence of the rape/violence against women culture we live in.
I’ve touched on the domestic violence connection to war here.
My blog on the justification of rape…because *she’s just a whore*  here.
My blog on the military and sexual harassment/rape here. I wish that I could say my prediction of expressions of “outrage” and then business as usual was wrong…but, alas….women will still have to go through their chain of command, who may or may not be harassing them, too, or encouraging an atmosphere of bullying (which is what sexual harassment/rape/violence are).  How can we say that the youth are wrong for chanting misogynist lyrics when adults are condoning the treatment of women as second class?
I briefly volunteered for an organization that used lawyers and paralegals volunteering to help victims of domestic violence get protective orders.  It was hard to take–the first case I had, I was to interview the victim.  She unfortunately was not native to this country and her English was hard to understand at times, so there was a small communication barrier.  She was afraid of her victimizer, because he threatened to have her sent back to her native country, among other things.  The lawyer, trying to work within the laws on the books (that suck), told her to take the minimum that the judge would offer her.  I tried to convince her, based on the attorney’s advice. She refused.  The judge ruled against her petition, leaving her vulnerable.  I never felt so worthless for letting her down. She was understandably upset and immediately felt we had let her down.  It was hard.
~~~~~~~~~~

The second part of the show, about Alzheimers’ and Dementia was particularly hard.  It’s coming up on a year anniversary of my mother’s death…and it’s already starting to affect me.

It was especially hard to see the faces of the patients–I saw my Mom in them.  Music is definitely a way to reach them, as it was one of the last things my mother lost, but in the end, she was so detached that I don’t know whether having her own headset would have helped.  The nursing home did play Beatles and other 60s music, but that was in the dining hall, not in the patients’ rooms.  Mostly, they watched mind-numbing TV that doesn’t stimulate them by any measure.

And, as above, a hairtest on heavy metals should also be standard for these patients….my God, think of the lives saved if these folks were toxic and able to be saved through detox….

Autistic Child found in New York

NBC News has this posted.  The remains of the autistic child that disappeared from school have been found.

I was re-reading my blog on school colocation that had mentioned an autistic child had gone missing because the school was so overcrowded, he slipped out without being noticed.  I wonder if this is the school…and if so, why aren’t the networks mentioning this?  (I had seen the news on CNN before NBC website)

Wanna bet they won’t mention that school overcrowding via colocation with charters is responsible for this death?

Yeah, just like they’re *all over* the Newark school principal firings…er I mean indefinite layoffs (yeah, they were fired…)…haven’t heard a peep about it, but judging by the visitors to my blog on it, this is a hot issue.

Mercury and Autism

(Most of you have read this stuff before, so it will be boring to you.  I’m posting for folks who are new to this info.)

Dr. Andrew Hall Cutler, whose protocol I follow, spoke out on the deliberate act of confusing the public (and even the medical profession) about mercury and autism.

He referred to this paper, by M. Catherine Desoto, PhD, and Robert Hitlan, PhD. , that appeared in the Journal on Child Neurology, Nov. 2007.

I know that when I was really sick, I did not want to leave my home.  I wanted no contact with people at all.  As I started to get better with chelation, I wanted to be around people–I just didn’t want to talk to anyone—this was more pronounced in new situations or with people I was unfamiliar with (that kind of goes with learning new things–if I learned something before being mercury poisoned, I’ve had an easier time learning a new aspect of it.  If, however, it was totally new, my eyes would glaze over from being overwhelmed.)

I still have autistic symptoms when I’m chelating–don’t want to talk (or write a blog).    This proves me beyond a doubt that there is a connection between mercury and autism.

As the authors of this paper explore, mercury exposure does not necessarily correlate with presence of mercury in the hair.  Dr. Cutler had said that the ability to excrete mercury is an individual thing, with some of us being poor at mercury/heavy metal elimination.  Again, the Irish are particularly susceptible to this as we lack the gene to excrete mercury properly.  Gluten intolerance also allows more mercury to enter the blood stream via “leaky gut” (holes in the gut caused by inflammation from the inability to digest the gluten)—a double whammy.

Dr. Cutler also mentioned something that happened in 1972 in Iraq:  many were poisoned by ethylmercury in grain (reports that it is methylmercury are wrong, according to Dr. Cutler).  Boy, there’s a study to end all studies of how these folks who survived and reproduced, passing mercury damaged DNA on to their offspring and how that affected their personalities/level of tolerance.

As I read about the seed sown in millions of acres, I’m wondering about the contamination of the soil?

In other health news, the FDA has come out with a lame warning on acetominophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol.  An Eli Lilly researcher once told me that acetominophen damages liver cells.  Ibuprofen damages kidney cells.  I don’t think there is a *safe* amount to take.  You have to weigh the options–how bad do you really feel?  Bad enough to kill off some liver or kidney cells?  This is why people need to be given the information and let them make up their own minds how much they are willing to risk their health…

Scientists discover that diet impacts health

…next, they’ll discover that water is wet….just a little snarky, there…

So, they’re talking about Bravo products for making yogurt on the support group.  I checked the website and OMG, they want 550 euro for a three months’ supply!  I started to smell a rat.

I found this blog with a video of the lead scientist.   I stopped the video about half way through when he starts with the arrogant attitude that this can’t be given to the general public…because it’s just too, too, complicated a product….that needs a scientist to direct the stupid person taking it….Pshaw.

Anyway, I thought I’d pass this along.  I don’t know if it will help, but I do know from the GAPS diet that all health begins in the gut, and anything that helps restore normal gut flora would help that person’s overall health and immune system.

Gluten or Not?

A member of the mercury support group posted a link to this video:

Another member questioned this guy’s assertions, because it seems like he is promoting his website and services and trying to scare people.  Good Grief, I wouldn’t be able to eat anything according to this guy.  He also fails to mention toxins in the body, and specificallly, heavy metal poisoning, which causes many of the autoimmune symptoms. And he doesn’t advocate for organic food consumption as a way to regain one’s health.

He doesn’t state whether he has additional training with a degree in nutrition, as Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride does, so I’m not as inclined to believe all of his assertions.

Rice is allowed on the GAPS diet, but I react to it.  Same with corn.  It’s an individual thing that everyone has to figure out for themselves.  I get a tell-tale red rash around my neck (redneck, heh) that shows up when I eat something that causes my body to react.

I do agree with his assertions that gastrointestinal symptoms are not the most prominent symptoms, as I did not have huge symptoms there, but do have more of the neurological with the migraines and such.
