Cyrus and Thicke **edited

Apparently there are no standards anymore.

And I would add a comment:

…instead of “miley got a lot of women pregnant tonight…”  I would say “….miley and robin got women raped tonight…”

Yeah, I know someone is going to say that I’m being dramatic.  Yes and No.  If you promote violence towards women, it removes a layer of restraint–seeing this shit on TV or on video normalizes it.  **edited to add:  what I mean by that the lyrics are promoting violence and then the over the top promotion of Thicke

Go Virginia!

Virginia has had enough of dismissive politicians who circumvent the people whom they represent and they have filed suit against what is basically taxation without representation.

In other education news,  Diane reposts about the Gesell Institute’s take on Common Core…waay back in 2010.

From the statement:

We urge the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to respect the individual developmental differences of children and revise the K-3 standards based on research and the advice of experts in the field of early childhood.

In the comments, someone provided a link to Bill Moyers’ program on Glitz and Greed in D.C.  I haven’t viewed it yet, but knowing Bill Moyers, it will be eye-opening.

This is why I love teachers

Diane Ravitch has this up on the last day of a First Grade teacher.

As I said in the comments section:

This is why a child sitting in front of a computer to “learn” is a fallacy. A stone cold computer could never teach the powerful lesson this wonderful teacher taught. A stone cold computer would not allow the kids to “make a mess” and express their creative talents as well as analytical skills.

God Bless and please write that book someone else suggested.

Earthships rising…

..ha ha.    Sorry, couldn’t avoid the pun.  But, yeah, they’ve raised about another $16,000 towards the goal of $68k for the Malawi construction.

Woot!

You may note that they also have projects in other places--Haiti being one.  They are also close to goal with this one, too.

Here’s to sustainability and artsy fartsy creativity, too. 🙂

Eli Broad maintains grip on Los Angeles schools

Diane Ravitch has this up on Eli Broad’s continued influence on Los Angeles Schools.  Clearly, if his candidates for school board have not been endorsed by the public, then it’s safe to say the public is not behind Broad.

Rape is Not A Joke

Ever. Black or White.

Thanks to Michael Twitty for speaking out on rape.

He is speaking about slave rape, but the post is just as relevant to today.

I wish we had white men speaking out against Robin Thicke’s rape song “Blurred Lines”....but no….they’re actively promoting it….along with white women gushing over it.  Makes me want to throw up.

Here’s a piece on the controversy of Thicke and how others have not been held to the same standard.  It seems a little on the apologist side….a weird thing I’ve noticed with the Thicke crowd…”he really is for women’s rights”  and “you’re just not understanding the meaning of the lyrics…”  Oh, really?? What don’t I understand about “I’m going to give you something to tear your ass in two” or  “I’m gonna take a good girl….you know you want it” or “not many women can refuse this pimpin'”  or “do it like it hurt”  ??

I can tell you that I didn’t know about the others’ songs.  I don’t listen to rap.  The only way I knew about Thicke is because it’s being heavily promoted all over the place, from the web to TV.  I’m sure if the others were that heavily promoted, there would be some backlash.

Rape is not fun.  Rape is not a joke.  And making your money off of promoting rape is the lowest of the low.

More letters to Bill and Melinda Gates **edited

This has got to be one of the most profound letters I’ve read to date.  It is truly a great assessment of the misinformation campaign being run by the Gates Foundation and the others profiting off of our children.    No educators were included in creating Common Core!!   Red flags right there.   Be sure to follow the link that begins “entire body of social science…”  –it leads to a Washington Post article by Valerie Strauss.  In it there is a link to a  protest letter signed by educators and other professionals against Common Core—lots of good information there.

Megalomaniacal Gates seems to think that every child should be manipulated towards a career in the technology field….everyone should be just like himself…?  Probably thinks he’s the new Messiah, too.  God help us.

The Monuments Men

…is being brought to the big screen this December.

Here is a page that briefly explains who they were and what they did.

I was happy to discover they did not neglect Capt. Rose Valland.  When they called the operation  “Monuments Men”  , the name implies that there were only men helping the effort.  As with most of history, women’s contributions are ignored or downplayed, and unfortunately, that seems to have been the case for Rose, as well.  She died without acknowledgement of her enormous contribution to the success of the operation.  Why is that?

Why did I have to learn in college that if it were not for women gathering nuts, berries, and seeds, human beings would not have survived….because men were not that good at hunting, because at that time, there were no tools? I should have learned this in the history classes I took in elementary, middle, and high school.  Nope.

Why are women’s contributions to history and to sustaining civilization not seen as important or consequential?  It would take nothing away from men’s contributions….so I’m at a loss to explain it.

Loeb putting millions into charter schools

Sometimes I wish my hunches weren’t right, then I wouldn’t  have to see the workings of unethical toads like Daniel Loeb. (hat tip to Diane Ravitch).

Yep.  He’s a union buster.  And is putting millions towards destroying them and the public school system.

It’s clear to me with the new information that Loeb is a conservative who probably sees the movie industry as supporting liberals, and wants to destroy it.  He puts money into schools that seek to destroy the creative by micromanaging them,  so it’s not a big leap that he wants to destroy the creative in movies.   Just my guess.
