Story here.
Dr. Julian Vasquez Heilig has a post up on his findings of segregation in Texas schools. He asserts that there is a third segregation–by language. Non-English speaking children are in the low socioeconomic group and racially segregated schools. Poverty is the number one reason children don’t do well in school–it’s hard to think when you’re hungry or your family may have to move that night to another area….and another school district.
And if you cannot understand English, it’s a given that you’re not going to learn. It’s hard to learn anything when your teacher sounds like Charlie Brown’s. All one has to do is listen to the spanish-speaking video to understand the problem.
This story is scary on all sides–Palin, who had crosshairs on her website towards those she disagreed with….and this guy who clearly is full of hate, but apparently his boss was not sure of what to do about him.
Fred Klonsky has a post up on a building that Chicago Public Schools had previously designated for destruction.
The public protested.
They promised it would not be torn down, and would be converted to a library.
Bulldozers have arrived on the scene.
So much for promises…
If you read the comment, it brought to mind the movie “The Monuments Men” by George Clooney and Grant Heslov….in it, he states the Nazis wanted to destroy the artwork and other stuff to destroy the culture…as if it never existed. I gotta say, it rings true for what is happening now….
love the lyrics of Bob Dylan)
Diane Ravitch has an excellent link up to Black Agenda’s take on the charter schools takeover. I am glad there are voices coming from the African American community against charters. Up until now, I haven’t heard their voice being raised at what is surely a stealth racism of closing public schools in poor and minority neighborhoods and replacing them with deficient charters run by well-paid CEO’s.
I hear plenty against Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel, but I’ve yet to hear any voices raised against Oprah for promoting charters out the wazoo.
