Ginger Bug

I read a post on fermented lemonade…it sounded so yummy, but I cannot tolerate whey (not recommended on GAPS diet nor on the autism diet against gluten, dairy, soy, and corn). So I went searching for another way to ferment lemonade, and found this wordpress page. I can’t experiment with it right now, but plan to as soon as possible…fermented lemonade sounds refreshing as well as good for you with probiotics. Enjoy.

I have posted pics of my ginger bug on Instagram a couple of times but without directions. When people then ask how to actually make the ginger bug, they probably want more guidance than “mix some ginger, sugar and water together and add more daily for about five days.” But really, that’s about all you do.

Like a sourdough starter, to make a ginger bug, you transform basic ingredients—rather microbes covering the ginger and floating around in your kitchen transform them—into wonderful yeasty goodness that you can then use to ferment your recipe. Also like a sourdough starter, your ginger bug needs regular feeding. I would love to take on more starters but I have hit my limit at four. They are like pets. I don’t want wind up the crazy cat lady of fermentation.

When the law was finally changed to allow him to leave the school, he encountered the work of artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Michelangelo for the first time.

“We’re not talking about some other foreign country,” he told The Early Edition‘s Margaret Gallagher. “We’re talking about Canada, that had to change the law for a native to leave the reservation. What kind of democracy are we really talking about?”

His ninth life

A tug at the heartstrings here. As I read about the IV tubes and such, I thought of Sammy, my kitty of 14 years. She had diabetes and when she succumbed to cancer, I had syringes and insulin still left as reminders of a life that was…and then there was Zeus — an imp that was so full of life that he is the only cat that I did not keep indoors–it would have killed his spirit. He would climb trees and bring home “dinner” which would gross me out. I always wondered if he felt offended that I rejected his offering. 🙂
Unfortunately, his love of outdoors was his detriment as someone hit him hard across his back, causing a severe injury that caused him terrible suffering and death a couple of days later.

Natural Cleaners **edited

You know, coming out of the brainwashing from those that stand to profit off of consumers…I had to really become ill** before realizing how dangerous chemicals are…even those promoted as “helping” us, such as cleaners.  It’s really hard to break away from that mindset because we’ve been misled to believe that natural is not as powerful as chemical.

Meanwhile, chemicals destroy the very thing that keeps us healthy: your immune system.

So, I personally switched to baking soda, vinegar, and borax as my main cleaners.  I got this recipe from a natural health magazine:

6 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar

2 Tablespoons Borax

Mix these two with a small amount of hot water in a quart spray bottle, then add enough filtered water to make a quart.

Vinegar and baking soda make a good toilet bowl cleaner.  Baking soda is a natural antibacterial and a nice scrub for tubs and such.

Farmer’s Almanac also has an article up on natural cleaners.  I like the uses of ash for scrubbing oil stains off of brick.

Being the change you wish to see in the world starts at home — detoxing our world is part of that.  It’s difficult to feel God’s presence when you’re toxic.

**edited:  Being so toxic from heavy metals, I would get migraines from car exhaust fumes, even if I only walked a total of twelve blocks to the grocery and back.  Or being exposed to cigarette smoke.  Or perfumes/after shave…and on…it proved to me how toxic chemicals really are and left no doubt in my mind that they destroy one’s health.

Reblogging this, too, for the continued lack of effort on the part of politicians who forget minimum wage voters the minute they are in office…to the homeless who are working. HOMELESS WHO ARE WORKING. Just thought I’d repeat that for all those who continually bash the homeless for being in the spot they’re in…

I went looking for the latest figures on CEO to worker pay gap and found this piece.  The speech given by Mary Jo White is good, too.  Although, I think she protests a little too much on the power of the SEC and its ability to stay unbiased in an increasingly biased world.  It just seems to me that Bush, Cheney & Co., did everything they could to diminish any agency that could thwart them and their banker, oil, and defense contractor friends.

This from Canada Broadcasting–the Swiss and Europeans are enacting a law capping executive pay at twelve times the lowest worker’s salary.  Boy, you’ll start seeing those poverty level wages start to go up pretty fast, eh?

Businesses such as Glencore Xstrata and Roche, which are headquartered in Switzerland, say they may consider leaving the country if the rule is passed.

The fear is that they will not…

Show me the money…

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted this — I’ve recently had to re-commit to not buying sweatshop clothing. I was offered a gift certificate to purchase clothing at stores that stock nothing but sweatshop clothing. I was afraid that I would appear ungrateful because I refused the gift…this is, as I see it, about spirituality as well as conscience — do unto others as I would wish others means not supporting corporate slave owners that make millions off of clothing while paying workers a $1 a day.

Adidas is not paying workers of a factory closed even though they have promised to adhere to a code of conduct.

After I became aware of the use of sweatshops for clothing, I started to deny my kids certain clothing they wanted because it was made in a country operating sweatshops.  I recall yelling matches with one of my daughters because she couldn’t have the “cool” clothes these stores were selling.

At my university, there was a hunger-strike because the university was using sweatshops for its apparel.  There was a lively discussion on it in one of the classes (a rare thing, believe me, because classes were set up to have lecture-only–rarely did we have meaningful discussions)  –angry students were going to grill some steaks by the hunger-strikers.  These folks had done nothing to them–they were protesting mistreatment to other human beings—so why would that anger them? Unbelievable.

Elsipogtog roadblocks planned to keep drugs out of community

You know, they said after 9/11 that the infringement of our personal rights was worth it to curtail terrorism…and look where that has led…
I admire the thought to rid the community of drugs and I know how they have destroyed communities and families. I just don’t think this is the way to go about it. Perhaps a history lesson of the 60s — where we had a great movement of peace and tolerance for one another until drugs were introduced. David Crosby was asked what destroyed the 60s movement…and he answered “cocaine”. I see this happening all over again with meth and legalized marijuana…it’s hard to be strong against the Dark Side when you’re toxic from chemicals — be they recreational or not. The young do not understand why the politicians want them doped out of their minds…

Malaysia Flight 370 found?

As you know, I had a vivid dream of MH370 about two weeks after it disappeared.  It was at the bottom of the ocean, everyone still strapped in their seats — with the exception of three bodies I saw float to the top.  To be more specific, these three people were in the first three seats of the left side of the plane (as you face forward), at the front of the regular section (in other words, not first class).   And this I did not reveal before, because I did not want to upset folks, but I have to say that the feeling I got was that these three were somehow connected, perhaps even responsible, for the plane going down.
